“Hire good people and treat them right” - Rodney Collins
As a consecutive second-year Emerging 30 honoree, one of the things to know about FITS (First in Trailer Service) is that they operate in three different niches of the transportation industry. In January 1997, Rodney Collins opened his first business, a truck and trailer repair company. In 2002, FITS Storage and Trailer Leasing was added, and in July 2003, Rodney purchased a local trucking company, forming FITS Enterprises. FITS is located on Old Lexington Pike, in the Richwood/Walton area. With their continued growth, and the recent purchases of two other companies, they now employ 17 people.
Rodney, who grew up in Independence, KY, and is one of six self-employed brothers, contributes their success to having good employees and treating them fairly. He considers the key to having a successful business is to "do what you know" and be willing to step out in faith and take risks. While he does have good employees, he stated the toughest challenge is finding quality employees, particularly the technicians for the repair service business. He has tried several different solutions, including technical college recruiting, and hiring high school co-ops, with varying degrees of success. Rodney said the Emerging 30 recognition has been a positive experience and an inspiration to his staff. But most of all, he recognizes that without their good employees, the business growth would not be at all possible.
